Aftershave originated as a practical solution to the irritation, small cuts, and infection risks associated with traditional shaving, particularly when straight razors were widely used. Its roots trace back to ancient civilizations, including the Romans and Egyptians, who applied scented oils, alcohol-based tonics, or herbal infusions to the skin after shaving to cleanse wounds and soothe irritation.
The use of alcohol was especially important before modern hygiene, as it acted as an antiseptic to prevent infection. Over time, these functional preparations evolved, and by the 18th and 19th centuries in Europe, aftershave became more refined, blending antiseptic properties with fragrance.
This marked the transition of aftershave from a purely medicinal necessity into a grooming staple that combined skincare, hygiene, and personal scent.
